MCI delivers industry first decarbonization leap with Star Cool 1.1
Maersk Container Industry (MCI) introduces the Star Cool 1.1, a development in its commitment to creating value for societies by enabling sustainable global cold-chains. This development in reefer technology meets modern demands with advanced features that minimize environmental impact.
“After completion of an extensive R&D and verification program we are excited to offer our customers the first reefer solution that offers adaptability to 3 alternative refrigerants while operating with the highest energy efficiency in the market – thereby delivering a significant advancement in reducing the environmental impact from reefer container operation.’’ says Søren Leth Johannsen, CEO at MCI.
The Star Cool 1.1 incorporates the widely used climate-friendly refrigerant, R1234yf, that offers an ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP). This initiative marks an industry first, making the Star Cool 1.1 the best solution to effectively eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from refrigerants without compromising energy efficiency. As part of our continuous efforts towards decarbonizing the shipping industry, the unit also boasts enhanced energy efficiency, consuming 8% less energy than previous models through advancements in compressor technology and design optimization. The next-generation compressor technology in the Star Cool 1.1 evolves from the proven principles and quality criteria of its predecessors, enabling faster temperature control and enhancing cargo care.
“The Star Cool 1.1 is a significant innovation in our quest to support the decarbonization of the shipping industry. Its ability to operate efficiently across multiple refrigerant options not only highlights its flexibility but also its readiness to meet both current and future safety and environmental standards. We have thoroughly field tested the upgraded Star Cool system and it is instrumental in our efforts to achieve lower energy consumption and reduced emissions, aligning with our long-term sustainability goals. Star Cool with the SC1.1 set the bar in our industry, that will need to standardize towards its future refrigerant programs for newbuild reefer equipment, along with that of the service networks that will be required to support the reefers of the future.” says Paul Clarke, Head of Reefer Technology at Maersk.
Leveraging data to enhance performance, the built-in energy meter that records energy usage and transmits this data wirelessly through the Sekstant solution. This integrated system not only tracks energy savings but also converts this information into carbon footprint data for specific voyages or periods, offering operators insight into their environmental impact.
Adaptability enables Star Cool 1.1 to remain versatile in the face of evolving global refrigerant regulations and environmental standards, ensuring both sustainability and operational excellence for the future. As in nature, the best adapted wins.
